Volvo Unveils More New Long-Haul Trucks

17 July 2017

Volvo Trucks North America recently unveiled its new VNL series long haul trucks, unveiling several configurations of the new line.

“The new Volvo VNL builds on our long-standing commitment to deliver the safest, most comfortable and most efficient long-haul truck on the market,” said Göran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “Infused with new innovations and technologies, we’re proud to expand upon that commitment to our current and future customers with this new design.”

The VNL series consists of the VNL 300, 400, 740, 760 and 860 trucks.

New design characteristics include swept back headlights with daytime running lights and a new-look grille and hood. The redesigned and repositioned engine air intakes allow for less turbulent intake air delivery, Volvo said. The new design also improved airflow up and around the cab has been improved with a new chassis and roof fairings, the company said.

The VNL series comes standard with the 13 L Volvo D13 engine, while daycab and VNL 400 models can spec the 11 L Volvo D11 as an option. The 15 L Cummins X15 is also available in the VNL series.

The D11 is rated 325 to 345 hp and D13 has outputs from 375 to 500 hp. The Cummins X15 is rated 485 to 605 hp.

The announcement of VNL series comes shortly after Volvo Trucks North America unveiled its Volvo VNR series for the regional-haul trucking industry earlier this year.

The VNL series was designed and engineered at Volvo Trucks’ North American technology center in Greensboro, N.C., and will be built at Volvo’s New River Valley assembly plant in Dublin, Va. Volvo’s engines and transmissions powering the VNL will be produced at Volvo’s powertrain manufacturing facility in Hagerstown, Md.

More information on the new vehicles will be included in an upcoming issue of Diesel Progress.
