Siemens Opens Innovation Center In Florida

09 October 2019

Siemens and its Materials Solutions business say its new innovation center is the only one of its kind in the U.S. to offer a unique pairing of design with manufacturing, implementing robotics, rapid prototyping, scanning, digital tools and on-site metal additive manufacturing.

The Siemens innovation center in Orlando, Florida, will focus on rapid problem solving supporting the company’s energy businesses, while Materials Solutions will offer additive services to support the innovation center and external customers.

The 17,000 sq. ft. center is equipped with the latest manufacturing and inspection technologies enabling faster solutions for industry opportunities and encouraging innovation for the creation of new, advanced components and digital solutions, the companies said. With a clear focus on developing world-class prototypes and services, the center will encourage the fostering of new ideas, methodologies and business models and boasts the latest automation tools such as robotic machines, 3D printer, and 3D scanners.

“This center is unique, bringing together a multitude of our innovative processes under one roof,” said Tim Holt, COO of Siemens Gas and Power. “The combination of these competencies, with the 12 years of experience in metal additive that Materials Solutions brings, provides us with a distinctive capability to support the development of holistic additive solutions/services to our customers in our energy business, as well as in high-performance industries such as aerospace, automotive and others.”

Joining the opening event were Vinod Philip, CEO of Siemens Service Power Generation, Steve Conner, CEO of Siemens Energy, Inc., Markus Seibold, VP of Additive Manufacturing at Siemens Power Generation Operations, and Mark Kamphaus, head of Technology & Innovation for Siemens Service Power Generation. They were joined by Siemens employees and key customers in the energy sector as well as guests from other high-performance industries such as aerospace.

Materials Solutions is a pioneer in the use of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology for the manufacture of high-performance metal parts, with a focus on high-temperature super alloys. Siemens acquired the originally UK-based company in 2016 and has since expanded not only the Worcester, England site, but also the global additive manufacturing network. The new location in Orlando Materials Solutions will serve the US market, especially in the energy and aerospace sector.
