On-Board Power For Missile Launcher

30 October 2018

Allison Transmission said it is expanding its partnership with Leonardo DRS, Arlington, Va., to develop an On-Board Vehicle Power (OBVP) system for military vehicles.  This latest collaboration between the two companies involves a heavier class of military vehicles – the 44-ton Oshkosh Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) equipped with Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missile launchers.

The new program will place a generator fully integrated within the housing of an Allison 4500 Specialty Series transmission and installed into the HEMTT’s driveline in its original configuration.

Allison said the change will not affect vehicle functionality. In fact, the On-Board Vehicle Power system is expected to will improve agility and reduce logistics costs because the vehicle will no longer have to be equipped with a separate generator. In addition, the OBVP is intended to improve mean time between mission failures, Allison said.

A more complete look at this project will be published in the December issue of Diesel Progress.
