New Engines For AG Machines

18 November 2019

At the Agritechnica 2019 show in Hanover, Germany, FPT Industrial launched the new F28 engine in a diesel and natural gas version.

The four-cylinder F28 has a 2.8-L displacement and can deliver a maximum power of 55 kW at 2300 r/min and maximum torque of 375 Nm at 1400 r/min. The engine is meant especially for specialized and small utility tractors.

The diesel version complies with EU Stage 5 and EPA Tier 4 Final emission standards with an aftertreatment solution that comprises diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) for the European market, and a DOC for North America. The packaging is the same for both regions.

The engine has a lean and compact design, with integrated exhaust gas recirculation channels and reduced block’s bridge solution. The single-side serviceability and service interval of 600 hours address the demand for simple maintenance and low running costs.

The F28 NG natural gas version has the same displacement and interface as the diesel version, with common base components. The aftertreatment system is a three-way catalyst. When running on biomethane, this engine could reduce CO2 emissions to almost zero. And talking about agricultural applications, biomethane production can contribute to the circular economy by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, restoring organic matter to the soil and helping local farmers to reduce production costs.

Another new launch at the show, was the N67 NG natural gas engine, developed for off-highway applications.

The six-cylinder inline engine has a displacement of 6.7 L delivering 180 kW power at 1800 r/min and 1035 Nm torque at 1500 r/min.

The N67 NG is compatible with compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and biomethane, and sports 10% lower CO2 emissions than diesel engines in real field conditions; this decreases to virtually zero when running on biomethane.

Operation with natural gas means also up to 98% less particulate matter (PM) and 48% less NOx when compared to diesel.

FPT Industrial has sold over 50 000 natural gas units worldwide to date; the company reported also that the brand currently holds 70% European market share for natural gas engines for goods and people transport and is also the manufacturer with the widest range of gas engines.
