Loop Energy supplies fuel cells for zero-emission gen-sets

Loop Energy, a designer and manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cell solutions, announced delivery of the first of three 50 kW T505 fuel cell systems to H2 Portable, a Canadian developer of hydrogen-electric mobile power solutions. The fuel cells will be integrated into gen-sets that will be used to provide clean on-demand power to movie sets, construction sites and other locations with limited grid power access.

According to Loop Energy, it was selected by H2 Portable as a technology provider following a tender process, which highlighted the enhanced fuel efficiency of its fuel cells. The company’s system features proprietary eFlow technology in the fuel cell stack’s bipolar plates, which Loop Energy said can deliver higher levels of fuel efficiency, peak power and durability. A trapezoid plate design enables improved uniform current density across the entire active area and increases gas velocity throughout the plate to deliver optimal performance and water management, the company added.

Loop Energy’s Global Technical Services team will be working alongside H2 Portable and Tycrop Mfg. to optimize and commercially scale the technology. Tycrop is a BC-based industrial manufacturing company partnering with H2 Portable on strategic development and manufacturing.

The gen-sets are expected to begin field testing in 2023. H2 Portable and Tycrop aim to scale production starting in 2024 to meet a growing demand for hydrogen-electric power systems across North American industries.

“Customers want a clean power solution that is reliable, safe and scalable,” said Dag Hinrichs, president of H2 Portable. “Partnering with Loop Energy and Tycrop provides the technology and manufacturing required to deliver a strong business case for our customers.”

“H2 Portable is developing solutions for a market that is primed to use hydrogen as a solution to decarbonize a broad range of industries,” said Loop Energy President & CEO, Ben Nyland. “We’re excited to see these generators produce zero-emission power across a diverse range of industries.”
