Liebherr and Leica Geosystems expand semi-automatic machine control systems

Liebherr and Leica Geosystems, in collaboration with Hexagon, are now offering an expanded range of semi-automatic machine control systems for Generation 8 crawler excavators.

The machine control systems are designed to enhance the efficiency, productivity, and safety of construction projects. With the construction industry undergoing a digital transformation, the demand for driver assistance systems like Leica Geosystems’ machine control systems is said to be growing rapidly.

Already available for various Liebherr mobile and crawler excavators, the Leica Geosystems’ machine control systems include 2D passive and 3D passive options for Generation 6 and 8, as well as 2D “3D-ready” semi-automatic and 3D semi-automatic for Generation 6.

The availability of the semi-automatic machine control systems has been extended to cover Generation 8 crawler excavators, specifically the R 922, R 924, R 926, R 928, R 930, R 934, R 938, and R 945 models. Additionally, the 2D “3D-ready” passive machine control system is also offered for these models.

Depending on the construction site’s needs, Liebherr provides suitable machine control systems - passive or semi-automatic. The passive system requires operators to follow indications on the display and operate the machine manually, while the semi-automatic system provides active support with a semi-automated removal mode. In the latter, the operator controls only the machine’s stick movements and speed using the joystick, as the system automatically adjusts all equipment movements to achieve the target profile.

Leica Geosystems offers different variants of machine control systems - 2D, 3D, or 2D “3D-ready.” The 2D system provides information about the machine’s height and inclination, while the 3D system uses reference models and GNSS for precise guidance. The 2D “3D-ready” variant allows immediate 2D operation, either passive or semi-automatic, and can be upgraded to a full-fledged 3D machine control system later.
