Pre-bauma News: Lots Of Engine Introductions

21 January 2016

While the massive bauma 2016 exhibition does not begin until April 11 in Munich, Germany, the organizers held a pre-bauma press briefing recently at which exhibiting manufacturers could talk about what they will be featuring at this every-three-year global event.

It was thought by some that this edition would be lighter on new engine news than previous bauma’s.  With a Stage 5 possibly in our future, that certainly does not seem to be the case.

Check back for more updates as we move closer to bauma 2016.

CUMMINS Cummins will use bauma 2016 as the launch pad for its next generation of diesel engines designed to meet EU Stage 5 emissions regulations. Along with meeting the Stage 5 standards across a 74 to 400 hp (55 to 300 kW) output range, the engines will also bring an increase in power and torque of up to 10%, Cummins said.

The Stage 5 engines will be supplied as an integrated system with the Single Module aftertreatment system developed by Cummins Emission Solutions. Developed in response to the needs of increasingly space-constrained equipment, the Single Module system will provide up to a 50% reduction in envelope size and a 30% reduction in weight compared with the existing Stage 4 and Tier 4 final systems, the company said.

Cummins heavy-duty engine duo, the QSG12 powering equipment up to 512 hp (382 kW) and the QSX15 with a 675 hp (503 kW) top rating, are ready to meet Stage 5 regulations by retaining the diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction (DPF-SCR) aftertreatment system used for Stage 4 and Tier 4 final applications. For those larger, higher-output machines, Cummins said the DPF-SCR technology provides an established installation package with ongoing continuity for equipment manufacturers as they transition machines to Stage 5 compliance in 2019.

The full lineup of Cummins engines will be revealed on the opening day of bauma at Hall A4, Stand 325.

DEUTZ  Deutz will present a brand new three-cylinder 2.2-L engine, the model TCD 2.2, with 55 kW output power in the diesel version. The engine will be especially suited for material handling vehicles and compact construction machinery, Deutz said.

The company will also announce a gas (LPG) version of the same 2.2-L engine – the G 2.2. – that will deliver 42 kW power within the same basic engine footprint.

The announcement follows the new long-term agreement that Deutz recently signed with Kion that includes the large forklift trucks of the Linde brand in its premium platforms, which will be equipped with the newly developed Deutz 2.2-L engine in the diesel and LPG version.

Also at bauma, another new Deutz gas engine will be introduced: the G 2.9 with 2.9-L displacement. It is derived from the TCD 2.9 diesel engine maintaining the same footprint and will deliver 55 kW power.

The two gas engines will be available to the market in 2019, complying with EU Stage 5 emissions regulations by only using a three-way catalytic converter without the need for an exhaust aftertreatment system, said Deutz.

HATZ  Hatz will complete its diesel engine line-up with the introduction of a three-cylinder variant to its water-cooled H family.  Similar to its four-cylinder brother the model 4H50, the new three-cylinder 3H50 utilizes Bosch common rail technology with 1800-bar maximum injection pressure. Hatz said this is the first time this system has been used in a three-cylinder off-highway diesel engine.

With turbochanger and intercooler, the new 1.5L 3H50 engine reaches maximum power of 42 kW and maximum torque of 185 Nm at 1600 to 2000 r/min.  The Hatz 3H50TI engine will be a EU Stage 3a and EPA Tier 4 interim variant, below 37 Kw. The 3H50TIC engine will comply with EU Stage 3b and Tier 4 final, thanks to exhaust gas recirculation and a diesel oxidation catalyst.

Both engine variants will be added to the Hatz’ range from 2018.

JCB  JCB will use bauma 2016 as the international launch of a range of new products including the 3CX Compact backhoe loader and four wheel loaders with Command Plus cabs.  JCB launched the 3CX Compact backhoe loader in September to the US market targeted primarily for road resurfacing and repair contractors, utilities and municipalities operating within tight spaces.  The 3CX Compact is powered by a 74 hp Tier 4 final JCB Diesel by Kohler engine.

JCB is also upgrading its mid-size wheel loader range, introducing the technology from its 457 wheel loader to the 427 and 437 models, along with the smaller 411 and 417 loaders.

All four of the new wheel loaders will use the JCB CommandPlus cab, first seen last year on the larger 457. This totally new ROPS structure has B pillars that have been moved out to the same width as the rear of the cab, providing a larger interior with a panoramic front windscreen.

MAN  MAN Engines will present new versions of the 12-cylinder model D2862 LE13x engine and the six-cylinder D3876 LE12x engine for construction machinery, both meeting Tier 4 final emissions standards, MAN said.

The D2862 LE13x is available in 588, 650, 750 and 816 kW versions, with 24.24L displacement. MAN said the wastegate turbocharging gives a maximum torque of 3750 to 5000 Nm at low speeds – between 1300 to 1400 r/min. The engine is equipped with modular exhaust gas aftertreatment with freely positionable individual components. This engine complies with Tier 4 final and EU Stage 5 emission standards with selective catalytic reduction technology and no exhaust gas recirculation.

The MAN D3876 LE12x has a power range of 415, 450 and 485 kW, with 15.26-L displacement. Variable turbine geometry ensures broad torque and power plateau between 1050 and 1450 r/min, with maximum torque of 2700 to 3000 Nm.

The engine is equipped with 2500-bar common rail injection system, exhaust gas recirculation and SCR, to meet EPA Tier 4 final and EU Stage 5 emissions regulations.

Based on the engine used in  MAN’s most powerful Euro 6 truck to date, this engine is targeted for heavy construction machinery, such as wheel loaders, excavators and mobile cranes.

YANMAR  Three new turbocharged and aftercooled engines will be launched by Yanmar at bauma. The new 1.6, 2.1 and 3. L engines feature Bosch and Denso common rail direct fuel injection systems, full authority electronics and offer rated powers ranging from 33.3 to 88.4 kW.

The three new engines are the three-cylinder 3TNV86CHT (33.3 kW at 2600 r/min; four-cylinder 4TNV86CHT (48.5 kW at 2600 r/min) and the four-cylinder 4TNV94FHT (69.8 kW at 2000 r/min:77.2 kW at 2200 r/min and 88.4 kW at 2500 r/min).
