Honda’s New GCV200 Engine

03 January 2019

Honda has introduced the all-new model GCV200 gasoline engine to its GC Series. Designed primarily for premium, residential power equipment applications, such as the newly redesigned Honda HRX Series lawn mowers, the GCV200 delivers more power and more torque—10% more as compared to the model GCV190 engine it replaces. The engine, on the HRX mowers, is available this month through Honda dealers.

The new GVC200 engine is a single cylinder, air-cooled, 4-stroke overhead valve design. With a total displacement of 201 cc, the engine produces a rated output 3.8 hp (2.8 kW) at 3000 rpm (to SAE J1349) and a maximum torque of 9.367 ft-lb (12.7 Nm) at 2500 rpm.

Honda said the increase in torque was done because with walk-behind lawn mowers such as the HRX, the size of the engine and its torque capabilities relate directly to the ability of the machine to tackle tough jobs and produce a clean, even cut. Because the engine is responsible for generating the torque power on a lawn mower, more torque means more force is being delivered to the blades, which results in easier and faster cutting—especially in heavy, thick grass where stalling is more prevalent.  In addition to delivering 10% more torque, the GCV200 weighs, on average, 6% less than the GCV190.

A more complete look on the Honda GCV200 can be found in the January issue of Diesel Progress.
