Rolls-Royce, Yuchai Expand Collaboration

21 June 2019

Seen at the initial announcement in 2016 of the joint venture between MTU and China’s Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co., the JV manufactures MTU Series 4000 diesel engines compliant with China Tier 3 emission standards with power outputs ranging from 1400 to 3490 kW.

The Rolls-Royce Power Systems division MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH and its Chinese partner Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co. announced that they intend to further intensify their collaboration in the construction and sale of diesel engines. A corresponding agreement was signed by representatives of both companies during the visit to Friedrichshafen by a high-ranking delegation from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region headed by Chairman Chen Wu and Yuchai Chairman Yan Ping.

The two companies are already partnering closely in their joint venture MTU Yuchai Power, which was founded in 2017. The JV manufactures MTU Series 4000 diesel engines compliant with China Tier 3 emission standards with power outputs ranging from 1400 to 3490 kW at a facility in the southern Chinese city of Yulin in Guangxi Province. The joint venture has been manufacturing MTU engines for power generation applications in the Chinese market since 2018.

“The successes we have had so far are a good basis for working together to develop further areas of collaboration for the benefit of all involved,” said Tobias Ostermaier, president, Greater China at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, at the signing of the agreement.

The JV facility in Yulin is the third manufacturing site for MTU Series 4000 engines, along with Friedrichshafen, Germany, and Aiken, South Carolina, U.S.A.

“In Rolls-Royce Power Systems, we are happy to have found a globally successful partner and a technology leader,” said Ping. “Combining this with the local market knowledge and production capability of Yuchai Machinery is an ideal way to address the future together.”
