MTU Diesels For New Hellgeth Timber Harvester

19 July 2018

Rolls-Royce and specialist vehicle manufacturer Hellgeth, Wurzbach-Rodacherbrunn, Germany will collaborate for the first time with the supply of MTU engines for Hellgeth’s new timber harvester. The prototype is to be tested in continuous operation beginning in August.

The new Hellgeth tracked vehicle is to be powered by 170 kW (228 hp) four-cylinder MTU Series 1000/ OM 934 diesel engines. The MTU engines are certified to EU Stage 5 requirements. The TC 624 is expected to be used mainly as a forwarder, taking harvested timber through wooded areas to forest roadways for loading onto trucks.

The Hellgeth TC 624 articulated timber harvester is fitted with rubber wetland-compatible tracked drives and has a full-suspension, adaptable drive system able to spread loads evenly on uneven terrain and avoid damaging the ground surface, e.g. when driving over roots.  Thanks to its design characteristics, the TC 624 is able to open up poorly accessible areas which remain out of bounds for wheeled vehicles.

The combination of the MTU Series 1000/ OM 934 engine, a power-split transmission and a full-suspension chassis, enable higher driving speeds both on and off-road, allowing the TC 624 to reach speeds of up to 40 km/hr (25 mph).
