Cat’s New C13B To Meet Stage 5

01 December 2017

Caterpillar has announced the addition of the new Cat C13B diesel engine.  Cat said the new 12.5 L diesel will leverage core of components with over 68 million hours of real world experience and complementary technology to the C9.3B platform that was launched in 2016 and is nearing production.

Designed to meet Stage 5 and Tier 4 final emission standards, the six-cylinder, engine combines upgraded air, electrical and aftertreatment systems to produce a range of powers from 456 to 576 hp (340 to 430 kW) and up to 2640 Nm of torque out of a package that is 30 percent lighter at these performance levels, when compared to previous models.

Jeff Moore, product manager for 7.2-18 liter engines, said increased performance is accentuated with transparent aftertreatment regeneration to maximize uptime and improvements in fuel consumption. The C13B is targeted at off-highway original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in all industrial sectors.

The C13B will be offered in a number of configurations to provide OEM customers the flexibility to reduce the cost of installation.  Engine mounted aftertreatment (EMAT) and Industrial Power Unit (IPU) configurations are offered out of the factory in Seguin, Tex. Remote mounted aftertreatment is also possible, with minimal installation requirements between the engine and aftertreatment.

Caterpillar said it will also certify its existing Stage 4/Tier 4 final engines in its C13, C15 and C18 product range to meet Stage 5 emission standards, and will need “only minimal changes to the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) internals to meet the standards.”

Dual label certification – Stage 5 and Tier 4 final – will be offered for its range of 9 to 18 liter products from 335 to 800 hp (250-597 kW).

There are no changes to customer interface points for existing products for Cat’s DPF solutions in this range.
