Build Your Dreams (BYD) is deploying a 543 MWh liquid-cooled battery energy storage system (BESS) outside Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

The project is a collaboration with Nevada public utility NV WEnergy and Energy Vault, a global energy storage company. It is expected to start construction in the second quarter of 2023, and commercial operation is expected by the end of the year. BYD, which has a USA base in California, is a battery-electric bus manufacturer.

According to Omar Aoun, vice president of North American sales at Energy Vault, the Cube Pro BESS will store and dispatch excess renewable energy, including wind and solar power, to Nevada’s electric grid during peak consumption hours to help meet the region’s high demand.

“Energy Vault is excited to partner with NV Energy and BYD to integrate and deliver, on a turn-key basis, a mission-critical BESS that will support Nevada’s largest electric provider in achieving its goal of net zero emissions by 2050,” Aoun said. “This collaboration proves the quality and flexibility of our services.”

BYD, which first deployed a MW-scale project in the US in 2011, said its Cube Pro system, at 2.6 MWh per unit, is designed for larger utility-scale projects and allows for an 80% increase in energy density over previous generations.
