New Komatsu Mining corporate campus proves award winning

Komatsu Mining Corp.’s new 180,000-sq.-ft. office building in Milwaukee, Wis., has been recognized by two respected business publications. The South Harbor office building and parking structure was honored by The Daily Reporter, a construction industry publication, with both a 2021 Top Projects award and the Best in Show award, an accolade bestowed on the top project among all 2021 award winners. In addition, the Milwaukee Business Journal recognized the project with its 2022 Best New Development Office award.

Designed to reflect Komatsu’s focus on sustainability, the office building received LEED v4 Building Design & Construction (BD+C) Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The LEED program certification helps to ensure electricity cost savings, lower carbon emissions and healthier environments. The facility is the only project in the city of Milwaukee to have achieved this level of certification and is currently the highest rated LEEDv4 project in the state.

John Koetz, Komatsu’s executive VP for Surface Mining, acknowledged those behind completion of the project. “We are grateful to our partners at Hunzinger Construction, EUA and GRAEF for making this project possible,” he stated. “We could not have completed this complex build and earned LEED Gold certification without the support of the full project team.”

The office structure is part of Komatsu’s new U.S. headquarters and manufacturing campus, which is built on a 58-acre former brownfield site and is located in Milwaukee’s Harbor District. A 430,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing facility also situated on the campus recently began operations as the large gearing center and large fabrication and machining centers of excellence for the global mining division. The facility produces the major components of large mining machines, including electric rope shovels, hybrid shovels, draglines and blasthole drills.
