S3COB Battery Management Sensor

Seuffer has developed a new sensor that is designed for monitoring battery status or measuring current in power management systems, starter systems and hybrid drive systems. The S3COB sensor monitors current by measuring the magnetic field, thus it does not intervene directly in the current circuit, Seuffer said, eliminating the need for shunts reducing the risks to the primary circuit in case of sensor failure.

The possibility of implementing an on-chip a temperature sensor and a facility for voltage measurement allows the creation of a comprehensive measurement system, the company said, adding that a compact design allows the S3COB to be utilized in tight spaces and rugged conditions.

Measurements are digitally processed, analyzed and formatted for the output chosen by the customer and high integration density means that influence from interferences is minimal, Seuffer said. The S3COB is self-monitoring, as the integrated reference current source allows for self testing during operation. The on-chip temperature sensor compensates for temperature drift, the company said.
