Sensors For VG Turbochargers

Beru AG has developed new position sensors for variable geometry turbochargers used in on- and off-highway engines. The new units operate on a magneto-static principle and measure the setting of the pneumatic actuators used to adjust the VGT turbine blades and enables the boost pressure to be regulated.

The sensors are adjusted precisely to the turbocharger itself, rather than calibrated at the vehicle, the company said. The sensor housing is constructed of Duroplast, a plastic material which undergoes a hardening process that is designed to enable it to resist deformation at high temperatures. According to Beru, the Duroplast material has extremely low viscosity and can withstand temperatures of up to 200 C° (392° F).
