LiuGong Lays Down a Challenge

Chinese OEM setting up European base in Amsterdam, Netherlands, hiring new staff and recruiting dealers

Chinese heavy construction equipment maker LiuGong Machinery Corp. announced a major assault on European markets at the Bauma trade show in Munich. The company, which claims to be the largest wheeled loader manufacturer in the world and headquartered in Guangxi, China, said it is setting up a new European base in Amsterdam, Netherlands, is hiring new staff and is recruiting dealers with a view to greatly expanding its sales of a range of equipment in Europe including excavators, rollers, wheeled loaders, skid steers and backhoes. The new office will house marketing experts, engineers and logistics staff.

The company already has a North America presence with an operation in Katy, Tex. and last year opened a wheel loader manufacturing facility near Indore, India.

The company said the machines are Tier 3 compliant and added it can "migrate to Tier 4 in the time frame required." Most of the company's products are Cummins-powered although it also uses engines from Yanmar and Perkins. The company did not rule out an eventual European manufacturing facility and said it wants "instant market recognition in all our markets" and added "We are not a Chinese brand we are a global brand."

At the same time, LiuGong said it would not rule out eventually building machines in Europe. It also said it more than doubled its profits in 2009 and that sales increased 10%.
