Dual Channel Exhaust Flowmeter

Sensors, Inc. has developed a new exhaust flowmeter designed for mobile engine emissions testing applications. The Semtech EFM-HS flowmeter can be used to measure exhaust flow rate from both spark-ignited and compression ignition engines as either a stand-alone device or in conjunction with gas analyzers to compute real-time mass emissions.

The EFM-HS flowmeter has a sampling rate of up to 2500 Hz and four dual-stage differential pressure transducers. This, the company said, allows the EFM-HS to accurately measure every forward and reverse flow pulsation from idle to maximum flow rate and accounts for these pulsations in the exhaust flow determination. This is an advantage over low-speed exhaust flowmeters which are susceptible to measurement error from high frequency pulsations, Sensors, Inc. said.

According to the company mass flow rate accuracy and linearity of the Semtech EFM-HS exceeds the U.S. and European performance standards over a 50:1 turndown ratio. Eight flow tube sizes accommodate engines from less than 0.8 L displacement up to 24 L. The eight combined differential pressure ranges span nearly five orders of magnitude, allowing accurate measurements over a wide range of flow rates.

Designed to be compact, the control module is 14.1 in long, 7.0 in. deep and 3.9 in. wide and weights 9 lb.
