Volvo Receives Order For Biogas Buses

Volvo Buses said Bernmobil in Switzerland has placed an order for 32 Volvo 7700 articulated buses, with an option for 39 more. Further, Volvo said the model 7700 buses will be fitted with a new gas engine. Full details on the engine were not immediately available, other than it is a new 9-liter gas engine capable of operation on natural gas or biogas. The new 9-liter engine with emission levels below both Euro 5 and EEV. Diesel versions of the 7700 have ratings of 215, 250 or 275 hp.

Bernmobil is the local public transport company in the city of Bern, Switzerland. The company has decided to gradually replace its diesel-operated buses with gas buses. The gas buses will run on biogas as opposed to natural gas. Stage one entails the order for 32 articulated buses from Volvo Buses. The first 10 buses will be shipped during summer 2006, with the remainder scheduled to follow in the autumn. The company also has an option for an additional 39 gas buses. The buses will be built in Volvo Buses' factory in Wroclaw, Poland.
