Caterpillar has added its C4.4 diesel to its line of Tier 3/Stage 3A, ACERT industrial engines, while at the same time announcing it will also introduce a mechanical version of the C4.4 that meets those emissions regulations as well. In making the announcement at the ICUEE Show in Louisville, Ky., Cat said the C4.4 ACERT will join seven other Cat engine platforms in the ACERT line. Production availability of the engine is scheduled for the third quarter of 2006, ahead of the 1/1/07 Tier 3 off-road emissions regulations covering that size of engine.

The C4.4 ACERT will have outputs from 83 to 150 hp and will feature a 4-valve head, Cat common rail fuel system and will be available in naturally-aspirated, turbocharged or turbocharged/after-cooled versions. The engine, Cat said, also features a 2.50 dBA noise level reduction at its 2200 rpm full rated speed, with the addition of optional features such as an isolated, non-structural oil pan and an insulated oil pan.

Cat also said a Tier 3/Stage 3A mechanical version of the C4.4 will be introduced in the third quarter of 2006 for ratings above 100 bhp and in the second quarter of 2007 for ratings below 100 bhp. The mechanical C4.4 will have ratings from 70 to 117 bhp. Cat said this is its platform technology for Tier 4 developments as well.
