Engine Braking Systems

October 31, 2011

Jacobs Vehicle Systems has developed a new integrated engine braking system that integrates the functionality of a standard compression release brake into a smaller footprint of a valve bridge.

The new Bridge Brake was introduced to meet the demand by global engine suppliers’ to minimize weight and space in a vehicle. According to Jacobs Vehicle Systems, the Bridge brake provides improved retarding performance with zero valve train height increase. It is especially suited for small-displacement engines and other applications where packaging space is at a premium.

The braking system, which was first launched on the Hyundai 10 L engine, replaces the standard exhaust valve bridge with a braking valve bridge. The brake incorporates traditional valve train componentry while allowing new more complex valve motions to be achieved, Jacobs said.
