MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH said it has won a major contract to supply nearly 500 yacht engines to the Italian shipbuilding group Ferretti. The shipyards in the group have ordered a total of around 450 Series 2000 Common Rail engines with 8, 10, 12, and 16 cylinders as well as 50 12V and 16V Series 4000 units.

Under the terms of the agreement, the engines will be delivered to the group's shipyards between 2005 and 2007. "This is currently the biggest order in the European shipbuilding industry," said Rainer Breidenbach, MTU vice president, sales.

The order will mark the market debut of the 12- and 16-cylinder versions of the Series 2000 Common Rail engines, following the 8 and 10V versions which were introduced in 2004.
