Caterpillar’s logistics services business unit has formed a joint venture with GM Europe aimed to boost the automaker’s productivity. The venture, Caterpillar Logistics Supply Chain Services GmbH, will handle operations at GM Europe parts and accessories facilities in various German and Italian cities. It will take on 1200 employees from GM Europe facilities by February, the companies said in a joint statement.

They said the 10-year joint venture agreement, designed to have a positive impact on the financial performance of GM Europe, was part of the restructuring program at the European division of the world's largest automaker announced last fall.

"We are confident that teaming with Cat Logistics will take our European logistics performance to a new level, providing an even more reliable service to our retailers and customers," said Jonathan Browning, vice president for sales, marketing and aftersales at GM Europe, in a statement.
