@Power Gen: New Cummins Gen-Sets For Residential, Light Commercial

Posted on November 14, 2013

Cummins Power Generation has launched a new range of small gaseous-fueled generator sets specifically designed for residential and light commercial applications at Power Gen International in Orlando. The new QuietConnect and PowerConnect gen-sets operate on natural gas or liquid propane and cover an output range of 22 to 60 kW to meet the backup power requirements of homes and small businesses, the company said.

“Cummins Power Generation is entering the light commercial marketplace with new and innovative standby generators that feature our legendary product performance, quality and service, specifically designed for this segment,” said Tony Satterthwaite, Cummins Power Generation president.

The Connect series generators are powered by Cummins QSJ2.4 engines that drive Cummins CA series alternators that have been developed exclusively for this family of generators, the company said. One of the key aspects of the CA series alternator is a brushless design, which Cummins said extends alternator life and minimizes additional maintenance requirements.

The QSJ2.4 engine is a four-cylinder inline engine that can be switched between LP or natural gas with no mechanical changes. Cummins purchases a long block from a third-party supplier and then integrates selected components, including the fuel system, flywheel, bell housing, starter, intake and exhaust manifolds and belt drive systems, at its Fridley, Minn., facilities. The electronic closed loop fuel system is designed to allow the engine to perform in varying altitude and temperature ranges without needing any manual fuel adjustments, Cummins said.

The QSJ2.4 engine is emissions certified by Cummins and is supported by the Cummins distribution network in North America and the company said that “extreme care has been taken to ensure all the components meet the customer requirements and also the engine meets Cummins’ reliability and dependability standards.”

The generator sets are available in 1800 or 3600 rpm configurations. Along with the new Connect generator series, Cummins Power Generation has also launched the RA series 100A and 200A transfer switch and PowerCommand 500, which is the latest remote monitoring device for residential and business applications. Both generators include the latest transfer switches and remote monitoring devices to ensure a safe and reliable transition from one power source to the other, the company said.
