Cat Announces Second Mining Plant Closure

Posted on November 4, 2013

Caterpillar will close an underground mining equipment plant in Beckley, West Virginia, Bloomberg has reported.

Production of Beckley's highwall mining machinery will be moved to Houston, Pa., where the company manufactures continuous mining machinery and longwall mining systems. Approximately 40 people will be affected by the move, Bloomberg reported.

This move comes on the heels of the announcement Oct. 29 that Cat will close its Kilgore, Texas, manufacturing operations by the end of the year. The Kilgore facility makes dippers and ballast boxes used in mining shovels. The production of ballast-boxes will shift to Caterpillar's plant in South Milwaukee, Wis., while dippers will be moved to a plant in Wamego, Kan.
