@Agritechnica: FPT Launches Three-Cylinder Off-Road Diesel

Posted on November 14, 2013

FPT Industrial is entering the small displacement off-road diesel engine market with a new 2.2 L diesel that it launched at Agritechnica in Germany. The new R22 engine is a three-cylinder engine that is rated 33 to 52 kW (44 to 69.7 hp) and is meant for agricultural and construction vehicles with a gross weight between 1.6 and 3.1 tonnes.

Complying with Tier 4 and Stage 3b emissions regulations, the R22 incorporates a 1600 bar common rail fuel injection system, two-valve-per-cylinder technology and a fixed geometry turbocharger with aftercooler and wastegate.

FPT said that emissions regulations for the power class below 56 kW led to the choice of adopting internal exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with a diesel oxidation catalyst and a maintenance-free particulate matter catalyst.

FPT reported that the engine has been developed with Italian engine manufacturer and partner VM Motori. Fiat previously owned a 50% stake in VM Motori and very recently completed the company's acquisition by taking over the remaining 50% share from General Motors.
