Engine Protocol Converter

Axiomatic has developed an electronic module designed to act as an interface between CAN buses operating at different baud rates and/or using different communications protocols. The protocol converter incorporates two isolated CAN bus ports (SAE J1939, CANopen) and one Isolated RS485 port (Modbus RTU/J1587) and is can be used on a broad range of mobile off-highway equipment, heavy-duty transport vehicles and generator set control systems.

In one recent application, Axiomatic said the unit is being used to translate information such as engine speed, total hours, total fuel information and alarms from the a J1587 marine engine control module into an SAE J1939 network for the engine control and monitoring system.

The converter, which is connected through an integrated Deutsch IPD 12-pin connector, is operational from 9 to 36 Vdc with 12 and 24 Vdc nominal and is configurable using the company’s Electronic Assistant system. The unit is designed to be compact for easy integration into engine systems and utilizes a fully sealed, IP67 rated housing for durability.
