New 5, 8 L Engines From Volvo Penta

Posted on March 26, 2014

Volvo Penta has introduced new 5 and 8 L engines that meet Tier 2/Stage 2, Tier 3/Stage 3a equivalent and Tier 4 final/Stage 4 emissions standards.

Developed in cooperation with Volvo Trucks and the Volvo Group, the D5 and D8 engines have a redesigned platform, advanced fuel injection and aftertreatment systems. Although the D5 and D8 engines are new to Volvo Penta in Stage II and IIIA configuration, the same base units have been subjected to hundreds of thousands of hours of running in trucks and buses and have undergone extensive field tests in a variety of applications, including terminal tractors and forklifts, said the company.

Displacement in the D5 and D8 is increased compared to previous versions, offering improved engine block stiffness, as well as higher torque at low speed, said the company. Despite the larger displacement, however, Volvo Penta said fuel consumption has been reduced by as much as 2.5%.
