Peugeot has unveiled the new diesel engine with which it intendeds to return to Le Mans racing competition in 2007. Peugeot unveiled the 5.5 L, V12 engine that will form the heart of its program. Following in the tradition of former Peugeot Le Mans racers, the car will be known as the 908 and a scale model will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show this fall. Two 908s will take part in the 2007 race and will compete with Audi’s diesel entry, the R10 TDI, which earlier this year won the endurance race at Sebring, Fla.

Peugeot’s engine will be rated 700 hp. Peugeot said the cylinder banks of its engine will be separated by an angle of 100º to maintain torsional rigidity of the structure while lowering the center of gravity.
