Generac’s New Air-Cooled 22 kW Home Standby Gen-Set

Posted on July 1, 2014

Generac Power Systems, has introduced a 22 kW Guardian Series air-cooled natural gas-fueled home standby generator. The Waukesha, Wis. manufacturer says the 22 kW Guardian Series is the largest air-cooled home standby generator on the market. To breakthrough what it said was a 20 kW “ceiling” for air-cooled home sets, Generac said its engineers developed a new air-cooled engine and alternator combination to get to the 22 kW output level.

“Previously, if a homeowner needed a generator with a little more ‘oomph’ than they could get from a 20 kW home standby, they’d have to invest several thousand dollars more for a 22 kW liquid cooled generator. But our new 22 kW Guardian Series generator provides that extra power for only a few hundred dollars more,” said Jake Thomas, senior product manager for Generac.

To support that point, Generac said the 22 kW air-cooled set has  an MSRP of $4699, while the 22 kW QuietSource liquid-cooled standby generator has an MSRP of $8909. The company’s 20 kW Guardian Series home standby generator has an MSRP of $4499.

Features of the new 22 kW Generac Guardian Series unit include a Generac OHVI engine purpose-built for generator use and True Power technology for operation of sensitive electronics and appliances.  The gen-set can also be installed within 18 inches of a home’s exterior wall, if located away from doors, windows, and fresh air intakes, and unless otherwise directed by local codes.

The set also includes the Evolution controller with dual-line multilingual LCD display, monitoring of history and maintenance logs as well as management of generator functions, and built-in hour meter to monitor run times.

The set can run on natural gas fuel pressure as low as 3.5 in. of water column.
