Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI) and Cummins India Limited (CIL) announced the limited production launch of CWI’s B Gas International (BGI) natural gas engine in India. Manufacturing of the engines, available in ratings from 150 to 230 hp takes place at CIL’s Daman facility in western India. The BGI engine was unveiled at the Auto Expo in New Delhi. The locally-manufactured BGI natural gas engine will be supplied to OEMs in India such as Tata Motors.

“The successful production launch is a key milestone for CWI,” said Guan Saw, president of Cummins Westport Inc. “The availability of a low cost locally manufactured BGI engine will enable CIL to leverage its long-term relationships with India’s largest OEMs, both in the domestic Indian market and the target export markets of these OEMs.”

CIL’s Vice President - Automotive Business, Arun Ramachandran added, “Local manufacturing capability of the BGI natural gas engines in India enables us to offer our markets innovative, state-of-the-art technology at a very competitive cost. As New Delhi leads the way for Indian cities by offering world class buses, Cummins India Limited is proud to be ready with localized Euro 3 compliant CNG engines that are capable of powering these state-of-the-art buses. We are excited about the BGI range of products since these are the first natural gas engines in India that can power other applications like concrete mixers and refuse trucks that need more power than stoichiometric gas engines.”
