Meritor WABCO Unveils New Brakes, Retrofit Kits

Posted on February 9, 2009

Meritor WABCO, a joint venture between ArvinMeritor and WABCO Vehicle Control Systems, has extended its PAN air disc brake family in North America with the introduction of the PAN 22, the first advanced single-piston air disc brake designed for North American commercial trailers with 22.5-inch wheels and axles rated to 22,000 lb.

Currently available as a trailer OEM option, the single piston air disc brake family will also be in tractors, trucks and buses. At 79 lb. including pads, the PAN 22 weighs less than any other air disc brake in its class, the company said and it also delivers up to 24,000 Nm braking torque performance. Its larger, thicker pads results in longer pad replacement intervals, Meritor WABCO said.

The PAN 22 incorporates the same single-piston clamping unit design used in Meritor WABCO’s PAN 17 and PAN 19 air disc brakes. Compact and efficient—with just 18 parts, the single-piston clamping unit helps reduce weight and complexity and allows for a compact design that easily adapts to axles, wheels and suspensions. It compensates for taper wear and enables optimal pad wear utilization. The encapsulated guiding system with metal protective covers enhances the PAN 22’s reliability and durability.

Meritor WABCO also announced its independent stability enhancement system for trailers, RSSplus, is now available as a retrofit kit for trailers with applications for both spring and air suspensions. RSSplus is part of the SmartTrac family of stability control products such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Roll Stability Control (RSC), and Automatic Traction Control (ATC) offering advanced functions designed to enhance vehicle stability.

RSSplus retrofit kits are backed by Meritor WABCO’s comprehensive warranty of one year/100,000 miles parts and labor. They are available immediately through ArvinMeritor’s Commercial Vehicle Aftermarket authorized outlets.
