Posted on April 7, 2014

Reflecting the current state of the mining equipment industry, Caterpillar Inc. has laid off about 60 more employees at its South Milwaukee, Wis. plant, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.   The layoffs are for an undetermined period of time, according to Steelworkers Local 1343, which represents the employees. Another 48 employees could be moved into different positions at the plant as a result of the layoffs, the union told the newspaper.

Caterpillar’s mining equipment division is based in South Milwaukee.  In 2013 the company cut its worldwide workforce by some 13,000 people, including about 400 jobs in Milwaukee and South Milwaukee.

In a statement, the company said it continues to take actions to reduce costs and better align its workforce with business needs.
